Andrew W. MacMurtrie Sportsperson of the Year Award

This award was founded by Daily Times reporter Matt Zabitka in 1948 and is presented annually to a sports-oriented individual who has voluntarily promoted, aided, assisted and/or contributed time to youth organizations in the County without compensation.  Mr. MacMurtrie was a banker and CEO at Sun Oil who believed that sports activities transcend race, creed and religion.  It is common knowledge that during his tenure at Sun Oil in the 40’s and 50’s he hired many able-bodied athletes in need of employment.  In spite of his demanding schedule, he still found time to assist youth programs.  He was a founder of the Chester Teener Baseball League and served as its first president.  It was the first teener league organized in Delaware County after Little League emerged in the late 1940’s.
